Summer Projects

So we've got some administrative type stuff to do. We'll (obviously) keep cracking on the work in the studio, but I thought we should get some of the other stuff in order, with the goal of having it done by September, August will be busy for both of us so maybe trying to get the bulk of this done in July would be a good idea.

1. Get a good artist statement done- I think we made pretty good progress on this last weekend, it would be a good idea to get a concise statement down, esp. with grant deadlines coming up.

2. Design and build websites (BCAC, Aquarium, Fort Grunt)- this shouldn't take that long, we don't have a lot to archive or anything yet, but getting the design down will take a little time.

3. Write and edit first Fort Grunt Quarterly.

4. Get whatever needs to be done to participate in Culture Crawls, etc- most of this will be done as other things are finished (FGW, statement, work, etc)

5. Write application for emerging artist grant at the Durham Arts Council- there will be a couple of info meetings for this too, in late August, we should make sure to attend, but getting the materials ready over the summer will be important. I'll keep an eye out for other opps.

6. Finalize things for the Aquarium- beginning schedule, application procedures, advertising. Work out maybe showing other work by same artist on the wall near the door.

7. Screen print postcard, with information for Fort Grunt on the back- this won't take that long if done after the website, etc is done, re: when the graphic decisions are made.

STUDIO GOALS:

1. Finish at least an episode each of Abel Sanchez and library comics.

2. Finish enough of the War in Heaven pieces to come to a resolution on them.

3. 10 to 15 finished pieces that work together as one. We may already have five there, or very close.

4. Finish the six angry sea life paintings for the window.

War in Heaven

At this point, I think we're starting to get somewhere with the disaster images, living (sharks, bugs, viruses, tentacles) vs the nonliving (tornados, meteors, flooding, explosions, earthquakes, black clouds) and possibly the unliving (zombies, ghosts, prions, arrows, possibly zombie dogs)

This is all, we think, going to end up as part of the War in Heaven, which might work best in a similar fashion as the Berlin show, worked out in long strips of the frosted mylar (it seems to give more leeway with working in layers...), so we've been working out some of the ideas in that format, along with some on paper in varying sizes, seems like we're getting a good mix of techniques working together... maybe by the end of the month there can be some weeding out. and so, the parade begins...

First month or so, part one

So here we are. Haven't been using this space as much, working on getting an actual website up, though I like the idea of keeping this going, as a place to keep working through ideas, especially as we're not in the studio together in the middle of the week, at least until you realize tai chi is lame.

So these first five weeks have mostly been set-up and burping out ideas, getting used to working together, and seeing how we can combine the themes we've been working with, comics, piles, sealife/animal/nature processes and imagery, displays, natural disasters.

Below is one of the pieces that I think has been getting somewhere, though a little tortured. This one started from a 40x60inch drawing from when I was in Delaware, that was a little dark, just a straight-up pile silhouette. A pretty good surface to start with, then a process of adding and subtracting elements. The dancing cupcakes, though funny, didn't quite work...

There's a couple moves left (outlining the ribbon fish, something else to the blue bubbles?), and even if this one doesn't end up really good, somethings are worth reusing, including the juxtaposition of the perspective and space vs. the flat elements.

More images of recent work to come.
